Attic Insulation During Heating Season: What Changes When Your Attic Is Properly Insulated?

During a New York heating season, your home is constantly trying to
hold onto the heat you are paying to produce. The attic sits at the
top of the building envelope, which makes it one of the most important
places to control heat loss.

In an uninsulated or badly underinsulated attic, heat moves upward
through the ceiling assembly much more easily. Air leakage around
wiring, plumbing penetrations, attic hatches, top plates, and other
openings can make the problem even worse. The result is a heating
system that runs longer, rooms that can feel colder or draftier, and
more energy being used simply to maintain the same thermostat setting.

A properly insulated attic changes that equation. Insulation increases
resistance to heat flow, while air sealing reduces the movement of
warm indoor air into the attic. Together, those improvements help keep
more of the heat inside the conditioned part of the home.

How much can that matter? ENERGY STAR estimates that homeowners can
save an average of about 15% on heating and cooling costs by air
sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl
spaces, and accessible basement areas. Their modeled savings are
generally higher in northern climate zones, where heating demand is
greater.

The savings are only part of the benefit. A properly insulated attic
can help reduce cold ceilings, uneven room temperatures, drafts, and
the feeling that the heating system is constantly playing catch-up. In
snowy climates, reducing heat leakage into the attic can also help
lower the risk of conditions that contribute to ice dams.

It is important to remember that insulation and air sealing work best
together. Simply adding more insulation over large air leaks does not
stop warm air from moving through the building envelope. A good attic
upgrade should address both the insulation level and the major leakage
points before the new insulation is installed.

If your attic is uninsulated, has insulation below the joists, or has
uneven coverage with large low spots, there may be a meaningful
opportunity to improve the home's winter performance. A properly
insulated attic can help your home hold heat longer, use less energy,
and stay more comfortable throughout the heating season.
